WHISTLING IN THE DARK
| LONELY TOGETHER | GOTTA GET RID OF THAT MAN | BALLAD OF BILL PICKETT | MR & MRS TEARDROPS | JEALOUSY | WHISTLING IN THE DARK |

LONELY TOGETHER
The more of this life that I spend
I never know how can a broken heart mend
And real love songs don’t have happy ends
So let’s be lonely together again

Let’s be lonely together tonight
Let’s talk about heartaches when love’s taken flight
Let’s talk about misery – all right
Let’s be lonely together tonight

You and me we’ve both been double crossed
But we’re still hanging on to the love that we lost
And we’ll always be counting the cost
So let’s be lonely together at last

CHORUS

We’ve both got a story to tell
About loving and hating and heaven and hell
And the cheating that’s broken the spell
So let’s be lonely together as well

CHORUS

GOTTA GET RID OF THAT MAN
You know he’s cheated you
He’s mistreated you
Gotta get rid of that man
And if you’re honest you
Know all lies are true
Gotta get rid of that man
You’ve taken it for years
You’ve brushed away your tears
You don’t need anymore
He’s gotta go

You’ve tolerated it
You’ve taken all that shit
Gotta get rid of that man
It’s time to pay his dues
And listen up to you
Gotta get rid of that man
If he pretends surprise
Just stare him in the eyes
Watch to see if he blinks
He’s Gotta Go

Throw him out and bolt the door
You don’t need him anymore
Gotta get rid of that man
Watch out if he slips back
Tries to get you in the sack
Gotta get rid of that man
He’ll never understand
No more than any man
How can he see if he’s blind?
He’s Gotta Go

BALLAD OF BILL PICKETT
Long before white men worked as cowboys
It was Blacks and Indians and Mexicans too
They earned so little three months on the trail
With whisky and a whore and there’s it all blew

Bill Pickett was the first great American cowboy
He was the best but he was black
He was a Negro Cherokee Indian cowboy
Ain’t no use to Hollywood and that’s a fact!
Oh Bill! Ain’t no use to Hollywood

Now Pickett brought bull dogging into the rodeo
No one had tried it Bill’s way before
‘Cos Bill didn’t need no lassos nor nothing
Just bare hands and teeth got the bull on the floor
Oh Bill! Ain’t no use to Hollywood

Y’see, Bill would reach over and grab the bull by the horns
He got pulled off his horse ‘n dragged the steer’s head around
Bill bites the bull’s lip and sinks his teeth in
Lets go his hands ‘n chews the bull to the ground
Oh Bill! Ain’t no use to Hollywood

Now Bill had a lot of friends in the rodeo
He worked with Tom Mix and Will Rogers too
But they were both white and Bill was a Zambo
So they got rich and famous and Bill stayed blue
Oh Bill! Y’ain’t no use to Hollywood
Bull dogging with his teeth
Oh Bill! Y’ain’t no use to Hollywood
Bull dogging with his teeth

Now Bill Pickett was the first great American cowboy…

MR & MRS TEARDROPS
We’ve tried to make it up
We’ve tried to break it down
We’ve tried to move our troubles to the other side of town
We’ve tried to live apart and be alone
But Mr and Mrs Teardrops are at home

I can’t say goodbye
You just can’t let go
Why’re we so entangled I would really like to know
But misery breeds misery and so
And Mr and Mrs Teardrops are at home

We’re at home    And we fight
And we moan      Every night

What is there to do
What is there to say
Why can’t I just let you go and watch you walk away?
I’ve tried but I just can’t leave you alone
Mr and Mrs Teardrops are at home

We’re at home    And we fight
And we moan      Every night

REPEAT 1st VERSE
We’ve tried to make it up
We’ve tried to break it down….

JEALOUSY
I watch you in the morning and
I’m watching you at night
I know what’s going on you better bet it
I know what you’ve been up to
And I know that I am right
If I catch you two together gonna get it
So however much you want me
Pushed aside or hid away
You gonna find I’ll be around for ever and a day
So tell me that you love me and you’ll never be untrue
And I won’t do anything to you

There’s a letter in the postbox and
I know just who it’s from
I don’t need to open it to know
That someone out there wishes somehow
I was dead and gone
But you know I ain’t never gonna go
I’ll be shackled to your shadow
I’ll be standing in your shoes
I’ll be sitting in your pocket there
And telling you the news

So tell me that you love me and you’ll never be untrue
And I won’t do anything to you
No I won’t do anything to you

If you think you’re gonna leave me honey
I’ve got news for you
You won’t leave another man again
For no other man will want you
When I have gotten through
Our love will be the end
So be careful what you’re doing
And no matter what you say
I’m telling you and your fancy man
You’ve had your dirty day
So tell me that you love me and you’ll never be untrue
And I won’t do anything to you
No I won’t do anything to you

WHISTLING IN THE DARK
Down here in the valley
I’m thinking of you
In your mansion
up there on the hill
If you can’t see yourself as the one that I love
You’ll be the one that I kill

DIVORCE OVER EASY
If you and your good woman
Ain’t good to each other no more
The times when that uneasy peace
Becomes an easy war
Sliding down the slippery slope
When life gets kinda greasy
If you ain’t married Sunny Side Up
Try Divorce Over Easy

If the flame has flickered low
And love has turned to hate
If nothing in your cold cold heart
Can help you clean the slate
If things just go from bad to worse
And then from worse to sleazy
If you ain’t married Sunny Side Up
Try Divorce Over Easy

Eggs is eggs and I’ll be bound
I know my eggs from bacon
Same for you, you’ve been around
You know when folks is fakin
Sliding down the slippery slope
When life gets kinda greasy
If you ain’t married Sunny Side Up
Try Divorce Over Easy

FALLING ANGELS
When Satan stepped from Heaven
When the Devil fell from grace
He took a bunch of angels with him
Left them scattered out in outer space

Now they're falling all around us
They knock us over - they're pushing through
They're causing mischief - they're breaking hearts
The way that falling angels do

Falling Angels  //  Out of Heaven
On their way  //   Down

Thought I'd found an angel loved me
Seemed to be too good to be true
You were just some falling angel
On your way down, passing through

Every time you feel your heart ache
A falling angel's brushed on by
Every time you feel your tears
Another angel's made you cry

Falling Angels  //  Out of Heaven
On their way  //   Down

Now the Devil pitched up downstairs
While the angels still hang around
They dazzle they distract us
They even knock us to the ground

Falling Angels  //  Out of Heaven
On their way  //   Down

HOMELESS HEART
Once in a while when a window is open
I jump right on through blindly hoping
To land on my feet and not on somebody’s heart
It’s all down to luck or it’s all down to breeding
Or it’s all down to chances you take without heeding
Those voices of doom who tell you you’re falling apart

For the chances are          You’re a Homeless heart
Yes the chances are          You’re a Homeless heart

There’s no use pretending – no use denying
There’s always an ending – you sure can rely on (that)
One day we’re all gonna wake up as dead as a bone
So get right on in, grab the bull by the horns
(You’ve had) nothing to lose since the day you were born
You’ll have nothing to gain by walking forever alone

For the chances are          You’re a Homeless heart
Yes the chances are          You’re a Homeless heart

Try chancing your arm and go out on a limb
Throw out the rulebook and try out some sin
An’ for sure sin is sinful and – you got it – Pleasure is Pain
If you can’t find a lover try riding a horse
There’s no alimony and it’s easy divorce
Ride into the sunset and you’re back in the saddle again

For the chances are          You’re a Homeless heart
Yes the chances are          You’re a Homeless heart

SUNK WITHOUT TRACE
Now that the whiskey ain’t working
There’s tears no drink can erase
Struck by a truckload of teardrops
Sunk Without Trace

Memories bite back in the morning
Memories that laugh in my face
It’s hard not to reach for the bottle
Sunk Without Trace

I can’t keep my head above water
I’ve drifted too far from the shore
My bridges are blazing behind me
My future has walked out the door

So give me a quart of rye whiskey
I got the time and the place
To drown in an ocean of moonshine
Sunk Without Trace

SAME OLD STORY – TOO LITTLE TOO LATE

Chorus:
When the days grow short        And the nights grow long
The winter wind                         Sings its bitter song
It’s the same old song               Of love and hate
The same old story                     Too little too late

Once upon a time                      A girl and boy
Found some feelings                 They enjoyed
They enjoyed them so much     That they were wed
Had no idea                              What lay ahead
They had two kids                     And then two more
He got a job                              At the local store
And they forgot the things         That they enjoyed
And he found booze                  And she found boys

Chorus:
When the days grow short        And the nights grow long
The winter wind                         Sings its bitter song
It’s the same old song               Of love and hate
The same old story                     Too little too late

One dark drunk night                 He came home late
His eyes burned red                   And full of hate
He pushed her down                 And squeezed her dry
He threw her out                       Left her to die
And when he saw                      Her cold cold face
No kiss of life                            -Could death erase
He cried and cried                      Howling like the wind
“You seen me Lord                    You know I sinned”

Chorus:
When the days grow short        And the nights grow long
The winter wind                         Sings its bitter song
It’s the same old song               Of love and hate
The same old story                     Too little too late
